Youth & Vocational

The Rotary Club of Sheffield Vulcan, hoping to build confidence and help young people prepare for the world after school, runs several mock interviews.  Over the past 2-3 years, we have been involved at several, Sheffield secondary schools – namely, Bradfield Academy, Firth Park School, Meadowhead Academy, Notre Dame High School and Silverdale Academy.

We have a long-standing link with Silverdale School, holding a public speaking competition for the Armstrong Trophy.  This was launched in the 1980s in memory of the un-timely death of the daughter, (a Silverdale pupil), of one of our still-current members.  It has been contended each year with a very high standard of presentation.

Over many years, Sheffield Vulcan Rotary Club has also been involved with the Rotary Youth Leadership Award, (RYLA), which has seen us sending two Year 11 students to participate in the Camp at Castleton over a 4-day course.  The school involved in recent years has been Firth Park, Sheffield.

Sheffield Vulcan has also been involved with younger pupils by taking Brunswick Junior School to a Sheffield pantomime.  Some 60 pupils enjoy a great day.  A definite change-of-life-experience.

In recent times we have given financial help to both Firth Park School and Tinsley Meadows Primary School to help with pupils’ needs regarding work experience visits and playground equipment.

We currently meet at 19.30 on Tuesday evening by Zoom. Restrictions permitting we plan to restart ‘real’ meetings during August - 18.30 at Abbeydale Sports Club, Abbeydale Road South, S17 3LJ. Please contact us for more specific information.
