Sheffield Vulcan Rotary Club

Over the last few months Sheffield Vulcan Rotary have been collecting second hand books to give to primary schools in areas of the city where children don’t have the luxury of books at home. To date we have collected and donated around 1200 books for  the ages of 2 and 11. This project has been so successful we are going to continue so we can spread the donations to a greater number of schools. If you have any books you no longer need that are in good condition please contact us and arrangements will be made to collect them.

A Sunday morning stroll on the Moor in Sheffield on 24th May would have delighted any fan of the colourful, unique, bizarre and jaw-dropping as over 100 custom vehicles flaunted their individuality, courtesy of the Moor Management plus the organisation and supervision of Vulcan Rotary….and on Sunday  16th August, a further 100 plus entries will display at  the annual Classic Car Show, which will grace the Moor and generate nostalgia by the bucketfuls.

We are nothing if not diverse in our projects – many parents, grandparents and other carers of children will be aware that the Millhouses Water Play Area, famous for its varied range of features, has been in a sorry state and unusable for some while, needing both TLC and money to repair and revitalise. Vulcan Rotary has funded the necessary costs and organised the required work, and the  official reopening by Andy Sangar, Lord Mayor of Sheffield, and John Dunkley of Sheffield Vulcan, was on Saturday 18th July. Now the Play Area, including a working Archimedes screw, traditional hand pumps and fun fountains is fully operational and once again providing hours of entertainment for kids to interact with water, learn through exploration and most importantly, have a splashing time.

As always, our annual Charity Golf Day took place at Sicklehome on the last day of June. The searing heat – 35c plus – failed to incinerate the participant’s spirits and over £4000 was raised. This year our beneficiaries are Sheffield Childrens Hospital Charity, Sheffield Hospital Charity, and St Lukes Hospice. (This annual event has raised over £100,000 since its inception 50 years ago.)

And you may have spotted us at the Crucible Theatre in May, when Roundabout, an award-winning Sheffield charity supporting homeless young people, held a fabulous “Night at the Musicals” sell out evening. We were the ones selling programmes.

The above are just some examples of how we service our community by giving time and enthusiasm. Our members have a wealth of life experience, professional expertise, and organising skills which we put to good use  for the benefit of others. Most of our energy inevitably goes into supporting local charities and charitable trusts but we also work on national projects and selected international projects which can attract additional, and often significant, funding from Rotary International itself. For instance, working with fellow rotarians both here and abroad we are helping to provide protection for village cattle herds from marauding lions in Zimbabwe.

If you want to put something back into society, then why not come and find out what Rotary is about.  We would be pleased to see you as a guest at a club meeting on a Tuesday evening at the Norfolk Arms on Ringinglow Road. Why not come with a friend, colleague or partner? We provide a warm welcome, good company, a hot meal, a knowledgeable speaker on a wide range of topics of interest and a chance to learn about what we do.

If you’re attracted to the idea of joining Sheffield Vulcan, we’d be pleased to welcome you to a meeting; contact us at secretary@vulcanrotary.org.uk.

We currently meet on Tuesday evening at 18:30 at The Norfolk Arms on Ringinglow Road
